What sub-metering gives you
- See where energy goes: consumption by building, floor, production line or machine, not just one figure for the whole site.
- Recharge tenants fairly: metering that is fit for recharging, so tenants pay for what they actually use.
- Cost products and jobs: know what each line or machine costs to run, which helps with pricing and planning.
- Evidence for audits: data that supports ISO 14001, ESOS, SECR and net zero reporting.
What we can arrange
We work with a specialist metering partner to design, install and support sub-metering and automatic meter reading across electricity, gas, water and heat.
- Scheme design: the right meters, communications and data outputs for your budget and your existing infrastructure.
- Automatic meter reading (AMR): half hourly readings from electricity sub-meters, with gas, water and heat brought in through pulse counters. Reports are set up to suit you and emailed to your team.
- Heat metering: new heat metering systems, or retrofits to existing ones.
- Upgrades for older meters: replacing discontinued or non compliant meters, moving unreliable pulse outputs to Modbus, M-Bus or LoRaWAN communications, and connecting older devices to cloud data collection.
- Verification audits: a check of the whole installation, from communications to commissioning, with an asset register and verification certificate. Available as a one off or every year.
- Fault finding: investigating suspected inaccuracies using system data and billing records, with a clear report on the causes and next steps.
- Tenant billing support: checking metering suits recharging and cost apportionment, and help with recharge disputes.
- Compliance: metering networks inspected and signed off against UK requirements under the Electricity Act 1989, plus technical notes supporting Building Regulations Part L and BREEAM metering credits.
- Capacity Market support: help with prequalification, metering hardware, testing and evidence.
- Training: practical training for facilities, energy and maintenance teams.
Sub-meters and your main meter are different
Your main meter, the one your supplier bills from, is looked after by your Meter Operator (MOP). Sub-meters sit behind it and belong to you. They do not change your supply contract, but they show you what is really happening inside the site. For the main meter side, see Metering, MOP and DC/DA.
Who it suits
- Landlords and multi-let commercial sites that recharge tenants.
- Manufacturers that want energy by line, machine or product.
- Warehouses, campuses, schools and universities with many buildings.
- Multi-site businesses that want one clear view of consumption.
How it works
- Tell us about the site and what you want to see.
- We arrange a survey and a scheme design.
- You receive a clear quote, with our fee disclosed.
- Meters are installed, commissioned and connected, and your data starts to flow.
Common questions
Do sub-meters affect my supply contract?
No. Sub-meters sit behind your main meter and are for your own information and recharging. Your supply contract and main meter stay the same.
Can you use the meters I already have?
Often, yes. Many existing meters can be connected to automatic meter reading, and older or discontinued meters can be upgraded or replaced.
Does it cover gas, water and heat?
Yes. Gas, water and heat meters can be brought into the same system alongside electricity, usually through pulse counters or heat meter modules.
Want to see where your energy goes?
Tell us about your site and what you want to measure. We will come back with options for sub-metering and automatic meter reading, with our fee disclosed.
